Sunday prep without eating the same dinner all week

Prepare a few useful components instead of five identical boxes. Then build different dinners around them.

Sunday prep without eating the same dinner all week

Think in components

An effective preparation session leaves you with options: washed vegetables, a cooked protein, a sauce and a starch. Keep the parts separate. Roast vegetables can accompany chicken one evening and become part of a bean salad another. A dressing should not be mixed into every portion before you know how you will serve it.

Choose only what you can realistically cook, cool and store safely. A small, well-managed batch is more useful than an ambitious menu that crowds the fridge with warm containers. Check freezer space before starting.

Use the oven and hob / stovetop together

While vegetables roast, prepare a sauce or cook beans on the hob. Cut ingredients before turning on multiple heat sources so you are not trying to chop while a pan burns. Keep raw poultry away from salad ingredients and wash equipment thoroughly between tasks.

Use a thermometer to check cooked poultry reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part, avoiding the bone. Appearance alone is not a reliable doneness check. Do not wash raw chicken: splashes can spread contamination around the sink.

Divide the week between fridge and freezer

A whole week of cooked food does not belong in the fridge under the conservative UK-style rule used here. Refrigerate meals for the next 48 hours and freeze later portions once cooled. Use shallow containers and refrigerate within 1–2 hours of cooking.

Label each container with the contents and date. Thaw frozen portions in the fridge and reheat only what you need, to 165°F (74°C). Keep raw ingredients below ready-to-eat food so drips cannot contaminate it.

Change the finish, not just the container

Fresh additions stop prepared food feeling repetitive. Serve chicken with warm vegetables one night, then use a safely stored portion with crisp salad and a lemon dressing. Add fresh herbs just before serving. A different texture and temperature can change the whole meal.

Leave one flexible evening in your plan for using remaining fresh ingredients. That is not an invitation to keep cooked food indefinitely: the storage clock still applies. Freeze promptly when plans change.
